Offering experiences of the workplace, such as a work placement or taster day, to someone aspiring to work in the industry, can benefit not only the individual you support, but also your business. It’s an excellent way to educate and inspire people about electrotechnical careers, support more people into the industry and raise the profile of your company.
The Careers and Enterprise Company has a Step-by-Step Guide to support employers who are interested in providing a young person with an experience of their workplace
TESP is developing more detailed guidance around work placements, but in the meantime the CLC Guidance for Employing Young People may be helpful in providing information about work placements. Page 27 of the Build UK Guide has information regarding insurance which may be a concern for main contractors.
T Levels area new qualification for students aged 16 to 19 in England who’ve finished GCSEs. They’re an alternative to A levels and apprenticeships, giving young people the technical and practical skills needed to be an asset in the workplace. Each T Level is equivalent in size to 3 A levels and helps young people develop the knowledge, attitude and practical skills to thrive in the workplace. They combine classroom learning with a substantial industry placement.
At the heart of each course, every T Level student completes an industry placement that lasts a minimum of 315 hours (approximately 45 days). Industry placements give you a unique opportunity to help develop new talent in your industry, and get young people work-ready.
Government guidance on T Level industrial placements is available here and TESP is happy to work with employers and providers to develop sector messaging and share best practice.
If you already employ apprentices, T Level students can often be accommodated on industrial placements on the days when apprentices are in college, which provides some business benefit and continuity.
You can find providers already delivering the Building Services Engineering T Level here.
